New Zealand

Dad and I just returned from our whirlwind trip to the South Island of New Zealand. What a magnificent place! First, we visited the capital of Christchurch, a funky little city with heaps of cafes and restaurants and a lovely little river that runs from the top to the bottom of town. It mixes laneway culture with classic English architecture, making it a pretty special place.

From Christchurch, we drove down to Dunedin, the second largest city on the South Island. Dunedin (pronounced Done-ee-din) has the coolest old railway I have ever seen, and some of the most beautiful cathedrals that rival their Italian predecessors.

From Dunedin, we drove across the island to Queenstown, the adventure capital of NZ. Queenstown sits on the stunning Lake Wakatipu at the base of a mountain range called "The Remarkables". In Queenstown, you can engage in pretty much any extreme sport you desire, including bungy jumping, sky diving, white water rafting, jet boating et al. We stuck with hiking, biking and cruising around the lake.

Our last stop before returning to Christchurch was Mt. Cook, three hours north of Queenstown. Mt. Cook is a stunning peak that rises over 12,300 ft above the earth. I was so excited because it was the first time I'd seen snow in over a year. Surrounded by aqua colored lakes and yellow plains, the mountains were really a sight to be seen.
