The grocery store is always an adventure, where cantaloupes are rock melons, peppers are capsicums, and cheddar cheese is just plain "tasty". I won't even get into the weirdness that is men's panty liners. I still haven't quite gotten the hang of ordering in kilos and grams, and we usually end up with fish for five, or grumbling stomachs.
Australia is a land of two button toilets, one for small things and one for... other things. Rent is paid weekly, but paychecks come monthly. You can gamble on anything you can think of anywhere you can think of, from poker machines in pubs to chess at church (I imagine). Beer comes in a middy or a schooner, and it's common to order it using rhyme (beer = a pigs ear). Why? Why not.
Coffee is ordered as a flat white, a long black and about a dozen other things, and you can't find one for cheaper than three dollars. Delicious, yes, but that much different than the cart on 43rd and 6th? I think not. Everyone keeps a bathing suit (cozi, swimmer, costume, tog) in their desk, and shooting down to the beach for a swim midday is more common than not. What can I say - I still have a lot to learn!
Awww, I <3 the cart on 43rd and 6th!
ReplyDeleteI wish I kept a bathing suit in my desk...
