Yesterday, Kendra and I visited Bondi Beach for a gorgeous day of sun, sand, and definitely surf! Bondi is Sydney’s most famous and populous beach and it is absolutely lovely. We were surprised to find that it’s fairly tiny, probably only a quarter of the size of my beloved Long Beach. However, in comparison to the other Sydney beaches in the eastern suburbs such as Bronte and Tamarama, it’s pretty spacious.
We took a bus from Circular Quay in Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD) and the 40-minute ride took us through some really beautiful neighborhoods, such as East Sydney, Paddington and Bondi Junction.
When we arrived to the beach, we walked up the to north end and explored along Mermaid Rocks, a part of the beach that’s made up of smooth coral and, well, rocks of course! The water was clear and cool and the tide filled little crevices and holes where Aussie sea life had made its home.
We decided to claim some sand on the south end of the beach where it seemed a bit quieter and spent a few hours reading and watching the surfers. While the waves looked huge to us, I don’t think a Sydneysider would agree. Regardless, we were a little weary of the water and only got our toes wet. It was 84 degrees and the breeze was fantastic, so we were comfortable and happy all the same.
The Aussie word of the day we learned is aioli, which here means mayonnaise – a true sandwich destroyer for me and a word that I will not soon forget!
